Our honest review of Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) breaks down its scares, pacing, and whether this horror movie truly stands the test of time.

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) is an American horror movie that I was greatly anticipating to see. I am a huge fan of the Insidious series. Insidious director and writer Leigh Whannell (Saw (2004), Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), Saw III (2006), Insidious (2010)) did a great job directing his first movie. Leigh also stars in the Insidious series as Specs and had a hand in making the franchise what it is today. I found it so funny that Lin Shay (Insidious (2010), There’s Something About Mary (1998), Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)) is in this chapter as well since she died in the first movie and has appeared in the second chapter. Elise story made this chapter the most heartfelt chapter.

Insidious: Chapter 3 takes place years before the Lambert family began experiencing paranormal activities that are seen in Insidious (2010) and Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013). The movie revolves around teenager Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott - Wreck-It Ralph (2012), A.N.T. Farm (2011), Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015), No Strings Attached (2011)) and her family. Quinn feels that she has it very hard since her mother passed away because her father became very dependent on her. She is almost done with high school and hopes to go to acting school far from her house so that she does not have to be with her father. Quinn first believed that her mother is trying to give her a message after she repeatedly kept seeing apparitions. Quinn soon figures out that the apparition was not her mother but an evil entity that is focused on hurting her. Fast forward and psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) is trying to help Quinn to find out who the spirit is before it really harms her or takes over her body entirely.

Overall, I was disappointed with the movie because it did not follow the Lambert story like the previous two Insidious movies. This chapter was all about Elise and Quinn - Elise’s story touched me emotionally, she keeps a piece of her husband’s clothes in her bed with her to go to sleep because that is all she can do since he died. Lin Shay gave the best performance in this movie whereas the other actors did an okay job. The scare factor was not there as it was in the first two movies, and it did not creep me out once. The storyline was flawless, and plotholes were unseen by me. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes horror movies but could do without the scares. Horror fans who like to be scared will not enjoy this movie because it felt more like a drama movie than a horror movie.
