Our honest review of Evil Dead Remake (2013) breaks down its scares, pacing, and whether this horror movie truly stands the test of time.
Evil Dead is one fantastic movie, and I recommend it to all horror and non-horror fans. I expected spooky killings, franticness, lost teenagers/young adults alone in the woods, screaming, and lots of blood. The title says it all, but Evil Dead delivers all I mentioned and more than I ever expected. Director Fede Alvarez (Ataque de Pánico!, Los pocillos, El último Alevare, El Cojonudo) did an exceptionally fantastic job directing his first English movie. I am so impressed with this guy because he did not have much experience. He is very young and has only done short Spanish films. I cannot wait to see Evil Dead Part 2. The special effects are truly unique and so realistic.
Warning - Evil Dead is not for people with weak stomachs who do not like the sight of blood because there is blood spillage everywhere in this movie. Maybe a little too much blood, but it is one of the most gruesome movies I have ever seen. Evil Dead will keep you on the edge of your seat and may make you jump a few times. The movie’s first five minutes might disinterest some people, but after that, it will reel you in with one suspense after another.
Evil Dead is about five friends who take a road trip to a cabin in the woods. Four of the friends tried an intervention for Mia (Jane Levy - Fun Size (2012), Nobody Walks (2012), Suburgatory (2011-present)), who was still using drugs. The friends were committed to keeping her in the cabin until she was drug-free but eventually tried escaping from the cabin due to unforeseen deadly circumstances. Jane Levy did an incredible job as Mia and a Deadite; I closed my eyes when she cut her tongue in half/split it open.
Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci - Horsemen(2009), Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (2009), Brotherhood (2010), Carriers (2009)) found a book in the basement of the cabin that has several warnings not to read and, of course, out of normal human curiosity he did the opposite. He then unleashed demons after reading the words one by one from the spellbook. Evil Dead had great camera action and got me paying attention to see what happens next. I felt terrible for Mia because she is still having difficulty staying away from drugs and is now being possessed by a demon. Everyone thinks Mia is going through withdrawal and later discovers everyone is being killed. Evil Dead does contain gruesome scenes that make you quench and shiver.
The makeup job done on the actresses and actors was just plain remarkable. It was realistic and gruesome, in my opinion.
Olivia (Jessica Lucas - Cloverfield (2008), The Covenant (2006), She’s the Man (2006), and Amusement (2008)) didn’t get much screen time but did a great job with the time she had. I was stunned when she cut her mouth open, stabbed Eric in the chest, and then stabbed him repeatedly with a syringe. I was blown away by all the action and special effects (Olivia’s head all over the floor).
Mia infected Natalie’s (Elizabeth Blackmore - The Road Home (2013)) arm when she bit her. Once again, Evil Dead has non-stop gore. Natalie then cuts off her arm but still gets possessed. She beat David (Shiloh Fernandez - Red Riding Hood (2011), The East (2013), 16 to Life (2009), Deadgirl (2008)), and Eric with a steel rod. David Mia’s brother is part of the five friends who went to the cabin. He plays a significant role in this movie. It was the first time I saw rain blood in a film. Mia rocked at the movie’s end when she sawed off the demon’s foot and then sawed her in half. IT WAS EPIC!!!!!!
