HellHorror’s review of Gabriel (2007) breaks down the plot, scares, cast performances, and its lasting impact on the horror genre.

Shane Abbess directed Gabriel (2007) is the film that put the late Andy Whitfield on my radar of movie stars to look out for. Gabriel merges the movie genres of action, horror, and fantasy very well. Gabriel won 2 movie awards and was nominated for 1 more.

Gabriel is a dark action/drama that takes place in the realm of Purgatory. This film reveals the struggle between Archangels and Fallen angels for control over the city of Purgatory. Purgatory’s population of re-born souls is important in the balance over light and dark. Gabriel, the last of seven Archangels is sent as the last and final hope in restoring light back to Purgatory. Gabriel must take a human form for the first time. Gabriel will battle his foes while also fighting his new found inner emotions.

The first time I watched Gabriel, I felt immediately drawn to the lead actor’s performance followed by that of the supporting cast. I got to see something refreshingly different in the mythos and style of cinematography. Anyone who enjoys angels battling demons and fallen angels or watching a compelling story should watch Gabriel. The fight scenes were well choreographed, and the visuals were stunning. The funny thing is, you still know that this film was made on a small budget, but it worked well.
