Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) is a French horror-action-adventure film that was loosely based on a series of real-life killings in the 18th century in France and also the legend of the Beast of Gevaudan. The movie had an estimated budget of $29 million and grossed over $70.7 million at the box office. Director Christophe Gans (Silent Hill (2006), Beauty and the Beast (2014), Crying Freeman (1995)) executed the movie marvelously with alluring and thrilling scenes. Christophe displayed his talent as he hits the mark most of the time keeping me engaged on a visual level with his camera movements, slow motion and on his precision on shooting the fight sequences. The movie contains female nudity, extreme violence, graphic scenes, excellent cinematography, high production values, brilliant performances, expertly shot scenes and atmospheric direction.
Brotherhood of the Wolf is set in France in the 18th century where Gregoire de Chevalier (Samuel Le Bihan) and Mani are assigned to investigate the death/killing of a mother and her children by a beast in the hills of Gevaudan. Their investigation led them to a bloody, deadly outcome. A mysterious creature that is unknown to everyone was roaming the mountains of central France killing humans and animals. The King of France sent a few people to kill the creature who had taken over 100 people lives already. The movie progressed to being an incredibly thrilling adventure for the most of the film and had the potential of being better if the third act delivered as well as the other acts.
Viewers will not appreciate or like this movie if they do not have the patience to sit through it to enjoy the suspense-filled monster scenes, styled martial arts, a few twists, and outstanding gore. The gore was exceptionally well done, and there was no shortage of it, ugly taxidermy, and bloody stabbings. All of the actors gave excellent performances, and the music flowed well with the movie which gave the film the extra oomph it needed. One bad thing about the movie was that it had a love thing going on that was not necessary because it took up too much time and was not developed properly. The third act appears dragged on and slow as though they were trying to stay thru to time.
