Horror fans searching for a breakdown of Rose Red (2002) will find our review covers the plot, themes, and the shocking ending everyone talks about.
Rose Red (2002) is an American-Canadian movie that Stephen King wrote - the film is not an adaptation of Stephen King’s book. Stephen King took some aspects from his other books (mostly Carrie and The Shining) and was able to make the story/movie original with its atmosphere and characters. Rose Red was a great mini-series to watch, and I recommend all horror fans try it.
Red Rose is about college professor Joyce Reardon (Nancy Travis - The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005), So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993), Last Man Standing (2011)) trying to prove her theories of psychic phenomena and the paranormal to be true to the psychology department at the university. The department thinks she is crazy, and it is all a joke and is--to prove the department wrong. She gathers a group of people, physics, who all have different powers to awaken the cells of the cavernous mansion called Rose Red in Seattle. Pam Asbury (Emily Deschanel - Boogeyman (2005), Cold Mountain (2003), Bones (2005)) is a psychic that can touch things. Cathy Kramer (Judith Ivey - What Alice Found (2003), Flags of Our Fathers (2006), The Devil’s Advocate (1997)) is an automatic writer psychic. Nick Hardaway (Julian Sands - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), A Room with a View (1985), The Killing Fields (1984)) is a psychic that can read minds. Nick is a funny guy that usually uses his psychic powers to help the group in many ways. Emery Waterman (Matt Ross - Face/Off (1997), The Aviator (2004), American Psycho (2000)) is a psychic who experiences/has visions. Joyce would rather have Annie (Kimberly J. Brown - Bringing Down the House (2003), A Bug’s Life (1998), Tumbleweeds (1999)) instead of the team she has right now. Anne is a teenager that is autistic and has a lot of psychic powers. Joyce and her group made their way to the mansion, unaware that the mansion might be expecting them and waiting for them to steal their energy. Joyce’s stubbornness threatened the entire group when faced with harmful situations. Joyce does not want to stop her mission to put her team out of harm’s way.
I gave the movie a seven because I love that the characters in the film were able to discover the mythology of the mansion and learn about it while at the same time interacting with it. I also like how the mythology of the mansion ties in with the team. There were exciting characters; the actors gave excellent performances, the storyline was fantastic, and the atmosphere throughout the three parts was done nicely. The first part of the three mini-series was slow-paced and weaker than the other two mini-series. The first part introduced us to all the characters who did not visit the mansion.
