Our take on Maximum Overdrive (1986) explores its plot, scares, and horror highlights to help fans decide if it deserves a place on their watchlist.

Maximum Overdrive (1986) is an American science fiction action horror movie that was directed and written by Stephen King. Stephen King (The Shawshank Redemption (1994), The Green Mile (1999), The Shining (1980), Stand by Me (1986)) loosely based the movie on his short story Trucks, which was featured in his first collection of short stories, Night Shift. The movie contains humor, actions, all sorts of machines and automobile coming alive, graphic brutal killings, violence and suspense.

Maximum Overdrive had great humor with machines (lawnmowers, electric knives, ATMs, etc.) coming to life as Earth passes through the tail of a comet. The alive machines are having fun assaulting and brutally killing humans. They even decide to draw the bridge up which killed many people. Imagine playing video games on an arcade machine and then getting electrocuted, that will make arcade players think twice about using an arcade machine. The humans try to fend off the giant trucks with firearms, M72 LAW rockets, M274 Mule and M60 machine guns. The movie was filled with action scenes that had great graphics and special effects. The movie basically revolves around machines and humans fighting each other until one of them wins. Who will it be - the humans or machines?

Stephen King did an incredible job directing his first movie with no directorial skills. He brought his screenplay to life, and I wish he had directed more movies because it meant more watching a movie made by an incredible genius writer. The actors all did an awesome job with their roles, and the special effects were not bad as well. The cinematography and 80’s rock music were good. I would recommend all Stephen King fans to watch this movie.
