Exploring Shrew's Nest (2014) through our review, we cover its story, scares, and how it fits into the broader horror genre landscape.
Shrew’s Nest (2014) is a drama thriller horror movie that was originally titled "Musarañas". Directors Juanfer Andrés (036 (2011)) and Esteban Roel (036 (2011)) did a phenomenal job executing this movie together and working as a team. They did an excellent job elaborating the mental illness, depression, sisters, betrayal, love and other human emotions. The film contains humor, beauty, violence, rage, sisters, a killer and suspense.
Montse (Macarena Gómez - Dagon (2001), Sexykiller, morirás por ella (2008), Films to Keep You Awake: To Let (2006)) keeps herself hidden from the outside world in her dilapidated apartment. Monste is the total opposite of her younger sister (Carolina Bang - Witching and Bitching (2013), Plutón B.R.B. Nero (2008), 036 (2011)) who lives with her in 1950s Spain. I do not know Montse sister (Carolina Bang) name, and I do not think it was ever mentioned. Montse is an unstable religious fragile girl who unexpectedly became the guardian/parent for her sister after their mother died and father vanished. Montse sister lives an ordinary life and soon endures a crisis at the age of 18 while Montse suffers from agoraphobia (Anxiety panic disorder). Montse now has severe flashbacks of her father (Luis Tosar - Cell 211 (2009), Sleep Tight (2011), Even the Rain (2010), Mondays in the Sun (2002)) abusing her. He was a vicious man, abused her and made her turn into the person she is today which is a maniac trapped in her apartment. Montse took care of her neighbour Carlos (Hugo Silva - Witching and Bitching (2013), Al salir de clase (1997), The Body (2012)) when he fell and injured himself. Carlos has a few secrets that add some thrills to this movie.
The movie is a sad movie once you understand what it is about and the relationship the sisters share. The ending was a major surprise for me and sad at the same time. I would watch this movie again and recommend it to horror fans and non-horror fans. The acting was superb; cinematography was awesome and the light was just right. It was a great movie even though all took place in the apartment or close by the apartment of Montse. I am looking forward to seeing more movies from these two directors that do not have much experience.
