This in-depth review of Snow White: A Tale of Terror (1997) explores its story, characters, and scares in detail, offering insights for every horror fan.
Snow White: A Tale of Terror (1997) is an American fantasy horror TV movie that is also known as Snow White in the Black Forest (1997). It is based on the "Snow White" fairy tale. Director Michael Cohn (When the Bough Breaks (1994), Interceptor (1993)) did a fantastic job executing this TV movie which I saw twice. The movie contains some s**ual references/content, violence, suspense, frightening scenes, comedy and creepiness. I personally do not recommend this movie for young kids, it is truly a darker tale of Snow White.
Snow White: A Tale of Terror starts out showing us wolves attacking a carriage with horses and coachman in the woods. The carriage was carrying pregnant Lilliana Hoffman (Joanna Roth - Frankenstein (1994), Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1990), Sliding Doors (1998)) and her husband Frederick (Sam Neill - Jurassic Park (1993), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Jurassic Park III (2001)) home. Lilliana made her husband perform a c-section on her in the woods because she knew she was dy**g from the carriage incident. Snow White was born and is named Lilli (Taryn Davis) - she was never referred to or called Snow White in the movie. Lilly became a little mischievous girl that did not like her stepmother Claudia (Sigourney Weaver - Alien (1979), Avatar (2009), Aliens (1986)) very much and did not want her affection. She is one spoiled little girl and ruined her father’s marriage night by throwing her ceremonial cup at Claudia’s.
Little Lilli had witnessed one of the servants dy**g after opening/looking into a mirror that Claudia keeps in a closet in another room. Lilli resents Claudia when she was grown because Claudia treats her like a little girl still and dresses her in little girlie clothing. Claudia blames Grown Lilli (Monica Keena - Freddy vs. Jason (2003), Crime + Punishment in Suburbia (2000), The Devil’s Advocate (1997)) for Claudia’s stillborn baby and of reminding her father of her mother by wearing her mother’s clothes. Claudia now seeks revenge on Lilli. Watch this movie to see what happens next. We know how Claudia became the wicked stepmother that uses her mirror for guidance and why Lilli is fleeing for life from Claudia. The Dwarves in this movie is replaced by--- watch the movie and see.
I like this dark drama movie because it is different from the Snow White fairy tale I grew up with. It gives me a different view of it and somewhat boggles my mind to research the truth. The spells cast by Claudia; the evil step-mother was astonishing to see. The acting, setting scenery, and cinematography was was on point. The movie does suggest/hint at cannibalism as Claudia was happy that she was eating the innards of Lilli - she is actually eating something else but was tricked into thinking it was Lilli’s. There is plot holes in this movie that I would have loved for the director to explain.
