Wrong Turn (2003) is an American/German horror movie that delivered what it promised from the trailers. Wrong Turn is the first film in its series and is followed by five direct-to-DVD movies. Director Rob Schmidt (The Alphabet Killer (2008), Crime + Punishment in Suburbia (2000), Speed of Life (1999)) excelled at making this cabin in the woods film. The film is similar to a lot of cabin in the woods movies, but it had enough suspense, intensity and thrills to stand out from the rest. The film contains s**ual language but no nudity or s**ual content, suspense, tension, thrills, extreme violence, bad language, bad language, gore, a lot of bloody scenes, cannibals, frightening scenes and a female being skinned alive off camera but you can visualize it as it is happening. The beautiful sceneries of Ontario, Canada was captured amazingly in this film.
The movie opens by showing Halley Smith (Yvonne Gaudry) and Rich Stoker (Joel Harris - Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), Life of Pi (2012)) rock climbing on a cliff in a remote forest in West Virginia. Their wonderful experience soon becomes a nightmare as Halley witnesses the murder of Rich. Someone is trying to pull Halley up, and she cuts the rope to fall instead of meeting her death above. Her escape plan did not work well as she trips on barb wire while running to her car and is soon pulled back to the woods. Chris Flynn (Desmond Harrington - Dexter (2006), Gossip Girl (2007), Rescue Me (2004)) is a medical student that decides to help a few people stranded on the road. Chris’ vehicle collided with the group’s vehicle after he took a different route due to an oil spillage on the road he had intended to take. The group’s vehicle incurred a flat tire after it ran over a barbed wire.
After a few events, two of the people from the group is murdered, and the rest of the group including Chris finds shelter in an isolated cabin. They soon discover human body parts and tried to escape but saw three disfigured men walking towards the cabin. The three men brought Francine’s corpse with them and began chowing down on her flesh as the four individuals watch silently in horror. One of the men, Saw-Tooth (Garry Robbins - Narc (2002), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), The Love Guru (2008)) saw the individuals. The three men began running after the individuals through the forest; watch the movie for all of the horrors that take place next. Watch the movie until it ends because there are clips in the credits.
I recommend all horror fans to watch this film because it is not your average cabin in the woods movie or cannibal movie. It was a fantastic watch, and it makes a good horror night film for entertaining friends and family who has a strong stomach. The actors did a great job with their performances, but they could have done better because some actors overacted at points. I applaud the camera crew and makeup department for doing an incredible job with their contribution to the film, it was the best contribution to the movie. The special effects, sets, cinematographer, screenplay, and director did a good job, but it could have easily been an excellent job and scored a 9 nine if there were not minor plot holes and goofs.
