Horror fans searching for a breakdown of Stan Helsing (2009) will find our review covers the plot, themes, and the shocking ending everyone talks about.
Bo Zenga’s Stan Hellsing (2009) is a rated R horror comedy film that is jam-packed with stupid-funny moments. Currently, you can stream this movie on Hulu if you are interested. Stan Hellsing quickly became a guilty pleasure of mine after the first viewing, and I rewatch when I have that craving for humor without the need for a fully developed story.
In the vein of spoof cinema like Austin Powers and the Scary Movie franchise, Stan Helsing lampoons contemporary film audiences’ never-ending fascination with what makes our blood curdle. In the story, hapless video store clerk Stan Helsing (Steve Howey - Shameless, Reba) and his friends must make a standard video delivery on Halloween night before going to a Halloween party. But when a chain of seemingly random mishaps strand Stan and the gang in Stormy Night Estates, Stan learns of his true destiny as a descendant of the legendary monster-hunter Van Helsing. With his motley band in tow – including his best friend Teddy (Kenan Thompson - Saturday Night Live, Snakes on a Plane (2006), Good Burger (1997)), he will battle evil in the form of parodies of movie monster icons "Freddy Krueger," "Jason Voorhees," "Leatherface," "Pinhead," "Michael Myers," and "Chucky"! The ultimate confrontation between good and evil will require immeasurable courage, grim determination – and a flair for karaoke?!?
Stan Helsing is not for your average viewer with its hard R rating. Steve Howey does a great job leading the cast, especially when he shares scenes with comedy icon Leslie Nielson (The Naked Gun franchise, Airplane (1980)). Stan Helsing shines as a hilarious casual movie, but the nonsense and lose story plot also hurt the film from being taken seriously. Stan Helsing gets an average score from me, which is higher than most people might score but it has a high rewatch score because it is so funny. It feels like every cast member tried their best, and the film does stand out with the horror icons set in many "different" situations than you have ever seen them in.
