Storm of the Century (1999) is an American-Canadian fantasy drama horror TV miniseries that was not based on Stephen King’s novel. Stephen King wrote the screenplay for Storm of the Century from the beginning. I saw the DVD of this movie and enjoyed the slow building suspense although it did not contain much CGI or gore. The suspense gives you a chilling feeling, and the tension and eeriness make you scared of what might happen next as the rain increases on the island. Writer Stephen King and director Craig R. Baxley did a phenomenal job executing this TV series.
Storm of the Century revolves around a powerful blizzard hitting Little Tall Island (fictional town), Maine leaving everyone trapped on the Island as all roads are blocked. André Linoge (Colm Feore - The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), Thor (2011), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), Face/Off (1997)) is a stranger to the town that somehow knows everyone’s darkest secrets. André does not tell anyone what he wants or why he is murdering people except for saying "Give me what I want, and I’ll go away." Constable Michael Anderson (Timothy Daly - Wings (1990), Private Practice (2007), Superman (1996), My Neighbor Totoro (1988)) puts André behind bars, but that does not stop him. André somehow has supernatural powers that give people on the island nightmares and is also able to make people commit bizarre suicides. What is even stranger is that André somehow got all of the town’s eight small children to go into an unconsciousness state. André later told everyone why he came to the town during a town meeting that he made happen. He told the people they have to give him one child, and he will not punish anyone because he cannot just take a child without the child not being offered to him. He went to tell the people that they have thirty minutes to come to a decision, or he will make them march into the river two-by-two at a time to meet their death as he did centuries ago to the people of Roanoke Island, North Carolina.
The series goes on to being a great suspenseful feast as the parents had to pick a rock blindly and if it is the black rock you have picked then your child will be the new protege. Storm of the Century was an amazing watch although I wish there were a better ending than when Mike saw a little boy with an older aged man in the alleyway. All of the actors did an excellent job with their roles, and it could not have been better. The cinematography, set, music and atmosphere were all done beautifully. I gave this movie an eight because there are some things that are not detailed and left unanswered. One of the things I keep thinking about long after the series finished is what was André. It was mentioned that he is not a god, not immortal, not a vampire but shows abilities of a vampire although he appears to be something different - what is he?
