HellHorror’s review of The Devil's Advocate (1997) breaks down the plot, scares, cast performances, and its lasting impact on the horror genre.

The Devil’s Advocate (1997) is a rated R 2h 24 min American supernatural drama mystery thriller film based on Andrew Neiderman’s novel, The Devil’s Advocate. The movie had an estimated budget of $57 million and grossed over $152 million at the box office. Director and executive producer Taylor Hackford (Ray (2004), Parker (2013), and Proof of Life (2000)) did an exquisite job executing this phenomenal movie that is still enjoyed today.

The Devil’s Advocate revolves around Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves - The Matrix (1999), John Wick (2014), Speed (1994)), who is a brilliant young lawyer who shines with vanity and pride. Kevin takes pleasure in winning every case and pays close attention to every fact about his case. John Milton (Al Pacino - The Godfather (1972), Scarface (1983), Heat (1995), The Godfather: Part II (1974)) is a partner in a New York law firm named Milton, Chadwick & Waters. John scrutinizes Kevin’s talent after he gives Kevin a large sum of money for the jury selection and offers him a job. The job is no regular job as it comes with an exclusive apartment, an outrageous salary, and other enticing things. Will Kevin accept this offer and go against his morality?

Kevin moves to Manhattan with his wife, Mary Ann (Charlize Thereon - Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), Monster (2003), Prometheus (2012), and Hancock (2008)) soon after the offer, although his mother warned him. Kevin could not be any happier with his life, which is grand. John is also a lawyer, but he helps with the world’s corruption. Kevin began leaving his wife for several hours at a time after he started thinking of Christabella (Connie Nielsen - Gladiator (2000), One Hour Photo (2002), Wonder Woman (2017)) as more than a co-worker/lawyer.

Kevin is soon faced with a few high-profile cases, including that of Alexander Cullen (Craig T. Nelson - The Incredibles (2004), Coach (1989-1997), Poltergeist (1982), and The Proposal (2009)), whom Kevin is assigned to defend. John is good at his game. Kevin falls for everything that John throws his way as demons start to torment his wife, Mary Anne, leading her to go into madness.

The Devil’s Advocate plays like a puzzle, with several little pieces coming together when you finish the puzzle. The Devil’s Advocate is a must-see for all types of fans as it has something for everyone. Al Pacino fans will be ecstatic to see him playing the role of Satan. I might add that he does an excellent job - it is as though he was made for the part.
