Tales of Poe (2014) is an American anthology fantasy horror movie that is 120 minutes long and was filmed in several locations in New York and New Jersey. Directors, producers and writers Bart Mastronardi (Vindication (2006), The Blood Shed (2007), Gallery of Fear (2012)) and Alan Rowe Kelly did a wonderful job working together to bring us this wonderful story. Alan was also the editor, key hair stylist/key makeup artist and played the role of Miss Lamarr/Gogo Montresor in this movie.
Tale of Poe starts with The Tell Tale Heart with the narrator being Debbie Rochon, who tells us how she ended up in the asylum. Debbie was an employee working as a live-in nurse for Peggy Lamarr, who gives a mysterious vibe upon seeing her. The sets were beautiful and gruesome as well as the makeup. I, however, did not enjoy the camerawork work as it appeared as though there was someone with a very shaky hand behind the camera. Overall it was a very good segment to watch. The Cask is the second segment, and it is based on The Cask Of Amontillado. This segment revolves around revenge and betrayal. Fortunato is getting married but is ill. He made himself look as though nothing is wrong with a brave face for his bride and their guest. Fortunato leads his guest down to his wine cellar as he told them a story of Amontillado - no one seems to notice that something strange is happening. Gogo surprised the heck out of me as I did not see the evil side of her coming out to being someone that is extremely malevolent. I applaud Alan for doing a fantastic job with the makeup job as it was done extremely good. I cannot complain about the camera angles in this segment because it was done well with awesome shots. The third segment is Dreams, and it is based on the poem, Dream. First off, let me say that I did not enjoy this segment, and it is the main reason I had to drop my score for this anthology to a 6. The sets were beautiful, but the segment ran at a slow snail pace with little excitement to entice someone to see the whole segment without falling asleep. It is about a female that appears to be having a bad time going through an LSD trip or something like that. You might want to skip this segment or watch it if you are a gorehound that likes deeply disturbing images.
Tales Of Poe did not have a huge budget to work with but pulled off a wonderful job with what they had. The visual appeal was there and made the movie all the better as I am a sucker for sets and sceneries. There were a few spooks that were amazing, and it might send a few chills up your spine. The actors all did a great job with their roles and yes, I do recommend this anthology to horror fans but be warned, the third segment is a douser.
