The Hive (2015) is an American sci-fi, horror thriller film that has nothing to do with its title or maybe it does, but I just do not see it. Director, producer and co-writer David Yarovesky (Ghild (2011), A Funny Thing Happened at the Quick Mart (2004), A Vampiric Love Story)) did an incredible job making a screenplay that has been seen several times his own with his unique touch. He blended the thrills, psychological drama, teen romance, and suspense into this horror film nicely, not excellent but great. David’s sense of art direction was seen in The Hive as well as his visual sense. The movie kept me guessing from the very beginning as to what direction it was leading forward to and I enjoyed that it was not straightforward. I immediately thought of Evil Dead (2013) when I heard demonic voices coming from the virus infected humans. David went wrong and just did not know how to blend the science experiments with flashback because that part did not seem right and was not explained enough.
The Hive revolve around Adam (Gabriel Basso - Super 8 (2011), The Kings of Summer (2013), The Big C (2010), Alabama Moon (2009)) suffering from amnesia. He has a mission on hand, and that is to dig as far back into his memory as he can so that he can remember who he is. He also has to remember so that he can save his love, Katie (Kathryn Prescott) before the virus takes total control over him. The movie starts by showing us Adam waking up in his cabin and not remembering how he got there. We see all sort of writing on his wall and furniture, and we know that he is not healthy because of the black gooey substance that is coming out of the sores on his body and the neon looking blood that can be seen in his veins. We soon see a huge amount of flashbacks.
Adam and Clark (Jacob Zachar - Greek (2007), Surf’s Up (2007), Detention of the Dead (2012), Drunkboat (2010)) are working as counselors at a summer camp named, Camp Yellowjacket. Adam and Clark are best friends and do almost everything together. Adam and Katie went to Adam’s favorite rendezvous point for an intimate evening which was interrupted by a plane crashing into a mountain not too far from them. Adam and Katie told Clark and his girlfriend, Jess (Gabrielle Walsh - Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014), Kleptosomnia (2011), The Vampire Diaries (2009)) about the crash. The four drive to the crash site where they became infected with a virus that is not so friendly as the flu virus because it turns humans into a rotting-looking puffed something with stuff oozing out of them and there is also tons of puking - just gross looking.
With all said about the virus, they can still remember things and function as usual although their corneas are cloudy. Adam soon discovers that some of the things he remembers is not his own memory, so he started to make notes of everything including his name. I did not enjoy the movie switching back and forth between present and the past, receives a negative from me for my experience. The film could have done with less flashing lights, less gore, less oozy gooey substance, and fewer flashbacks as it became overwhelming at points. Horror fans that enjoy a good movie that will totally gross you out will enjoy this movie that made me lose my appetite.
