The Atticus Institute (2015) thriller drama horror movie is also known as Zabava u institutu Atticus in Croatia. Director and writer Chris Sparling (Buried (2010), ATM (2012), The Sea of Trees (2015), An Uzi at the Alamo (2005)) did an excellent job directing his third movie. I believe he has the potential to bring horror fans phenomenal films. Chris is a relatively new director and writer that I cannot wait to see more of. The movie has its creepy atmosphere that put the spooks in you from time to time. The film took a little from The Exorcist (1973) and some other possession movies.
The Atticus Institute is not the usual found footage movie that we are so used to seeing.
It is basically a fake documentary with video footages from an experiment in the 1970s. We see people who survived the experiment 40 years ago looking at the footage. Some psychic researchers did an experiment on hundreds of people and did not get many results. The researchers were about to give up when a woman volunteered and proved to the scientists that the psychic abilities are very real. Things turn from good to bad in no time after discovering this female is like no other and her powers are exceptional. There is an apparently powerful person that wants to use the possessed woman for his own good. The possessed woman (Judith) can be used as a weapon for assassinating people because she can read minds and use telekinesis. Judith is not my favorite character in this movie. She makes fun of a scientist by reminding her that she was not there when her mother died. On the other note, I was happy when the scientist ran back into the room to attack Judith after she had previously left from the insult/humiliation.
I could not believe the ending and thought it could have ended better and less rushed. Why was it left hanging where the survivors were still looking for closure. The makeup job, sets, video footages that appeared dated, and the actors were all excellent. The CGI was not on par and was terrible for the most part of it. Creating the 1970s feel with its footage was done wonderfully. Go see this movie, and you shall not be disappointed.
