The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations (2009) is an American sci-fi psychological thriller that is the third movie in the Butterfly Effect franchise. Director Seth Grossman (The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations (2009), The Elephant King (2006), $50K and a Call Girl: A Love Story (2014), Shock Act (2004)) did a phenomenal job directing this entertaining movie. The Butterfly Effect 3 is only similar to the two previous films in its sequel because of time travel but has nothing else in common. The film contains gore, nudity, time travel, alternate timeline, s**ual content, extreme violence, bad language/profanity, drug use and murders.
Sam Reide (Chris Carmack – Nashville (2012), Beauty & the Briefcase (2010), Shark Night 3D (2011)) has an extraordinary power, and that power gives him the ability to travel/to jump back in time. Sam works as a faux-psychic and helps the police arrest many murderers. He travels back in time to see who the murderer was and notifies the police of his conclusion. The police believe that Sam is a psychic and does not know that Sam can time travel. Sam’s younger sister Jenna (Rachel Miner - Guiding Light (1952), Bully (2001), Penny Dreadful (2006)) loves Sam very much and tries her hardest for nothing to happen to him while he jumps back in time. Sam’s deceased girlfriend Elizabeth Brown (Sarah Habel) sister Rebecca Brown (Mia Serafino - Saving Mr. Banks (2013), Oz the Great and Powerful (2013), Approaching Midnight (2013)) insists on that Sam seek out who is the real killer. Rebecca believes that the man on death row for her sister’s murder is innocent and needs Sam to jump back into time to see who the real killer is. Sam knows better but breaks the jumping rules regardless to help Rebecca and his curiosity. What happens next was intriguing and mind boggling.
The Butterfly Effect 3 was more interesting/entertaining than The Butterfly Effect 2 (2006) but does not surpass the first movie in its sequel. I gave this movie a five because it was entertaining but there were a lot of questions left unanswered/unexplained, and then when it was answered, it did not make sense. I admired the director’s effort and was happy that he stepped up and gave us a satisfying ending. The movie was a nice watch overall and is worth watching although it is not related to the first two movies in its sequel except for the concept of time travel.
