The Canal (2014) is an Irish thriller horror movie that passed my expectations. I am amazed of how many great horror movies we are receiving this year. Keep it coming directors because the horror fans love it. Director and writer Ivan Kavanagh (The Fading Light (2009), Tin Can Man (2007), Our Wonderful Home (2008)) does not have much experience but pulled off the job. I look forward to seeing more movies from Ivan because he has a talent for directing bone-chilling horror movies. The Canal contains tension, jump scares, sitting on the edge of your scenes, frightening scenes, gore and thrills. The movie makes you have chills up your spine and will leave you with images in your head.
David (Rupert Evans - Hellboy (2004), Agora (2009), Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (2010)) is a film archivist that is married to gorgeous Alice. Alice (Hannah Hoekstra - App (2013), Assepoester: Een Modern Sprookje (2014), Sunday Baby (2012)) is very successful and has a son with her husband David. The family lived in an old brownstone home for about five years, but David saw that Alice is distancing herself from him. David’s suspicion of his beautiful wife cheating with a co-worker is confirmed in the worst detail way possible. He found crime footage of a horrific crime that happened in his home in the 1900’s. David thought that was the worst of his problems, but he was wrong. Detective McNamara (Steve Oram - The World’s End (2013), It’s All Gone Pete Tong (2004), Kill List (2011)) suspect David is involved with his wife’s disappearance. David thinks the murder victim ghost from 1902 is involved with his wife’s disappearance because he saw a dark man shadow the same night she disappeared from their home. Sophie (Kelly Byrne) is the nanny of David’s son, and she is worried that David is mentally losing it. David believes that all the bad occurrences that are happening to him is because of shadowy things working in the wall of his home is against him.
The third act of the movie is not for the faint hearted/ weak stomach audience because it was gruesome, scary and gory. I recommend all horror fans to see The Canal because it is comparable to most top rated horror movies. It is unique and chilling. The acting was good so was the sets.
