The Entity (1982) shocked audiences with its ending. Our spoiler-free review explains the scares, themes, and what makes this film unforgettable.

The Entity (1982) is an American biography drama horror movie that is based on author Frank De Felitta‘s novel of the same title. The biography part of the film refers to true disturbing events that are altered and dramatized for movie purposes. Director Sidney J. Furie (Iron Eagle II (1988), Iron Eagle (1986), Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987), The Ipcress File (1965)) captured this movie marvelously on camera. The movie was filmed in Laird International Studio - Culver City, California, USA and Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, California, USA. The film contains graphic s**ual contents, visible graphic nudity, bad language, intense, scary r**ing scenes, no fist on fist violence, suspense, scares and minor drug use including pipes and cigars.

Single mother Carla Moran (Barbara Hershey - Black Swan (2010), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Falling Down (1993), Insidious (2010)) is violently r**ed and tormented by an invisible assailant in her home. It did not take long for her to leave her home with her children after several poltergeist activities started. Carla decided to return home the following day but met with another deadly encounter when her car mysteriously goes out of control in traffic. Carla’s friend Cindy (Margaret Blye - The Italian Job (1969), Hombre (1967), Hard Times (1975)) told Carla that she should see a psychiatrist. Carla is attacked again in her bathroom leaving her with bite marks and bruises after seeing psychiatrist Dr. Sneiderman. Dr. Sneiderman (Ron Silver - Ali (2001), Timecop (1994), Reversal of Fortune (1990)) believes that Carla is inflicting the abuse on herself. Some of the wounds on Carla’s body are in places that are impossible for Carla to reach. Soon after, it is shown that Carla had a very traumatic childhood and adolescence with having a teenage pregnancy, being s**ually and physically abused, and dealing with her first husband’s violent death. Dr. Sneiderman and Cindy believes that Carla is just losing it and is delusional causing her to think there is paranormal activity in her home and surroundings.

Dr. Sneiderman tried to persuade Carla to admit herself to a psychiatric hospital for observation after she was attacked in front of her son resulting her son to have a broken wrist. Cindy finally witnesses a paranormal attack, and they invited two parapsychologists to visit Carla’s home. The parapsychologists convinced Carla to take part in an experiment that might freeze the ghost/paranormal entity. After a few more events, we see Dr. Sniederman trying to help Carla after the experiment did not go the way they planned.

Overall, I enjoyed watching the movie because it was somewhat original and captivating. The movie was slow paced at times, but the screenplay was well written and made the dialogue interesting to hear. Horror fans might not get a kick out of this movie because it does not contain many jump out of your seat horror moments. The scares are not that scary but interesting and worth seeing. The actors did a great job with their performances as well as the cinematographers. The Entity is one of the best horror movies made in the 1980s although I would give the special effects a score of five. The sets were minimal but worked out nicely and did not stray all over the place. I would recommend all horror and nonhorror fans to watch this movie.
