The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns (1999) is Hallmark Entertainment fantasy adventure family movie that was filmed in England, UK. Director John Henderson (Loch Ness (1996), The Borrowers (1992), Comic Relief: Doctor Who - The Curse of Fatal Death (1999)) executed this family oriented movie perfectly. My family watched this movie at least once every year and did not get tired of it. The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns is a magical film that I encourage all families to see at least once. The movie contains a little bit of not intense kissing, violence including Faeries and Leprechauns fighting each other but no blood is shown and a giant that is made up of lava that might be frightening to younger kids. There is also one scene of a females bare back showing because she is about to go skinny dipping, but it is barely noticeable. I love how the movie made a lot of references to Romeo and Juliet where two lovers take poison, and there are opposite clans that are fighting.
The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns contains two stories that intertwine later in the movie. The first story is of an American business person who encounters magical leprechauns when he visited Ireland. The second is of two lovers that are on different sides of the magical war, fairy and leprechaun that are lovers.
Jack Woods (Randy Quaid - Brokeback Mountain (2005), Independence Day (1996), Kingpin (1996), National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983)) is the American business person. All that Jack wants to do is spend the holiday in a small cottage in Irish town Kerry in Ireland peacefully but will he get to? Jack spotted Kathleen Fitzpatrick (Orla Brady - A Love Divided (1999), Wuthering Heights (1998), The Luzhin Defence (2000), Jesse Stone: Death in Paradise (2006)) swimming. Jack returns to his cottage after Kathleen chased him off and reached for a bottle of Irish poitín when an invisible leprechaun fights him for the bottle of poitín. Jack fell and became unconscious but awakes the next morning to see the leprechaun and chases him to a river. The leprechaun, Seamus Muldoon (Colm Meaney - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993), Con Air (1997), Law Abiding Citizen (2009), The Damned United (2009)) fell into the river and Jack jumps in to save him. Jack and Seamus became friends, and Jack later sees the mystical world of the leprechauns.
The second story: Mickey meets fairy-princess, Jessica (Caroline Carver - The Royal Today (2008), The Aryan Couple (2004), A Rather English Marriage (1998)) who later finds out after falling in love with Mickey that he is a leprechaun. After a few events that involve fairies and leprechauns dy**g - Princes Jessica’s parents sent Jessica with her governess, Lady Margaret (Phyllida Law) to a hidden castle that is under the water. Mickey (Daniel Betts - Fury (2014), Carrington (1995), Shot Through the Heart (1998)) searches everywhere for his love, Jessica. Watch the movie, find out if he finds her and how the two stories intertwine.
This movie was almost flawless, but I cannot name one movie that is flawless and excels in every area, so I gave this movie a high score because it deserves it. The movie delivers in every field, acting, special effects, makeup, music, and cinematography. I did not find any plot holes, just minor goofs that can be overlooked.
