This in-depth review of The People Under the Stairs (1991) explores its story, characters, and scares in detail, offering insights for every horror fan.
Wes Craven‘s The People Under the Stairs (1991) is both written and directed by Craven. Craven had a budget of $6 million for this film. The People Under the Stairs grossed $24.2 million at the box office.
The People Under the Stairs is about a bunch of folks who break into a seemingly harmless home. A young boy referred to as Fool (Brandon Quintin Adams) gets tagged along with Leroy (a young Ving Rhames) and another to rob the house. They rob a Man (Everett McGill) and Woman (Wendy Robie) that is also how they are referenced in the film. Unknowingly, the man and woman live together and are in fact brother and sister who have taken children to raise them in their home-prison as their own. They also become trapped and fight for a way to get freed.
Wes Craven created a suburban Texas Chainsaw Massacre type film here without the chainsaw, similar roots. This film is strange but also entertaining to see what happens next. Not a film that I will rewatch too often but at least, watch once more to clear up a few questions. Not one one of Wes Craven‘s better film but still a film to watch if you are a die hard Craven fan.
