HellHorror’s review of Werewolf Rising (2014) breaks down the plot, scares, cast performances, and its lasting impact on the horror genre.
Werewolf Rising (2014) is an American werewolf horror movie that is not your typical werewolf film. Director and writer BC Furtney (New Terminal Hotel (2010), Fangoria: Blood Drive (2004), Mr. Eryams (2004), Fangoria: Blood Drive II (2005)) failed at executing Werewolf Rising. I was anticipating the arrival of this film because I am a huge fan of werewolf movies, but this movie was far from what I usually enjoy. The title, Werewolf Rising, made me believe that his film would be outstanding, and my big smile turned into a frown while viewing this film. Werewolf Rising had a screenplay/storyline that was all over the place as though the writer/director was making it up as the movie progresses.
Werewolf Rising revolves around Emma (Melissa Carnell - I’m Namen der Liebe (2012), Young Again (2010), Boggy Creek (2010), Humans vs. Zombies (2011)) who is a country girl that wants to live in the big city. Emma left the country life to live in the big city and returned several years later with significant problems. Emma thought she would get the rest/relaxation and peace that she needed in the Arkansas mountains, but she was wrong as there is a bloodthirsty werewolf in the woods. Emma soon met the werewolf and had to fight to save her life and soul because there was an evil underworld that she did not know existed before.
Werewolf Rising is not good or bad, average where the werewolf looks good with its budget, and the acting was pretty decent especially Bill Oberst Jr.‘s acting skills. The werewolf spends most of its time in the movie chasing Emma around and turning people into werewolves instead of eating/violently attacking them. If you are looking for a werewolf movie where the werewolf kills people, this movie is not for you. I was amused that an attempt at making a twist ending was pushed into there, but it did not work because it was apparent that there was not much thought that went into the twist.
