HellHorror’s review of Bride of Chucky (1998) breaks down the plot, scares, cast performances, and its lasting impact on the horror genre.
Bride of Chucky (1998) is a Canadian-American comedy romance horror movie that was distributed by Universal Pictures and is the fourth installment of the Chucky franchise. Director Ronny Yu (Fearless (2006), Freddy vs. Jason (2003), Formula 51 (2001)) did an amazing job making this movie into a more humorous movie than the previous installments. Chucky is known as the brand name for the Chucky franchise. Bride of Chucky does not revolve around a child having the possessed doll and that is why it does not have the words "Child’s Play" in the title. Bride of Chucky continues from the events of Child’s Play 3 but does not follow the same plot. Chucky in Bride of Chucky became Chucky’s new permanent look with his face covered in stitches, staples, and scars making him appear scary.
Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly - Monsters, Inc. (2001), Bound (1996), Liar Liar (1997)) was serial killer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif - The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), Dune (1984), Halloween (2007)) former girlfriend and accomplice. Tiffany thinks that Ray’s soul is still in the Chucky doll so she murdered a police officer so that she can take Chucky’s remains from the police evidence locker. Tiffany is one sick chick as she is determined to get back her Ray as she stitches him back together and performed the same voodoo ritual Ray did ten years ago to bring her Ray back to life in the doll. Chucky is seen alive and kills Damien (Alexis Arquette - Pulp Fiction (1994), The Wedding Singer (1998), Blended (2014)) who is Tiffany’s admirer. Fast forward and we see Chucky electrocuting Tiffany and uses the same voodoo spell to transfer Tiffany’s soul into the bride doll so that Tiffany can feel how it is to live in a doll. Tiffany and Chucky decide to go on a mission to find an amulet that can help them restore their soul into a human body which they have chosen. The movie progresses to be a fantastic entertaining comedy thriller that I have seen many times. The mixture of comedy and horror was just right and nothing was overdone.
The ending of the movie was a treat that was unforeseen. The movie was filled with suspense and heart pounding tension that might make you sit on the edge of your seat. I am a huge Chucky fan and I think the soundtrack went well with the gory horror that Chucky is causing everywhere. Open minded viewers are recommended to see this movie because the movie has no real point and is filled with unrealistic humor that makes no sense but is funny and entertaining - that statement contradicts each other but it what it is.
